2011 Statement
-
Welcome to the 2011 season! Our goal as an organization is to make this the greatest youth sports experience your child, and your family as a whole, has ever had. We want to be known as the best youth sports club in Orleans, one that gives back to the community, sets a good example, and truly lives its values.
What are those values? They can be found in the cheer our teams do after every practice or game “Pride, Respect, Team.”
Here is what “Pride, Respect, Team”, means to us as Bengals:
· It means that we will always do our best, and that we will strive for excellence every time we take to the field.
· It means that all members of the Bengal family are valued and respected. NO ONE will ever be bullied or ignored on our watch.
· It means that we treat everyone with dignity, and that mistakes are understood to be simply part of the learning process.
· It means that EVERY DAY is a chance for us to “win”, simply by being together and growing as a team and a club.
· It means that we will respect the game – officials, coaches, players and fans. This means both Bengals, and the folks representing other clubs. We will do this at ALL times, not just when it is convenient or easy to do so.
These are our core values, and they govern everything we do. Feel free to hold us to account on these values, and let us know how we are doing in upholding them. See you at the field!

Bengal Family:
We all knew that, under the leadership of Coach Ntare, our Midgets had a tremendously successful 2011 season. Just how successful was driven home today with the release of the 2011 Midget All-Star and Award selections.
No fewer than 10 Bengal players were selected as League All-Stars:
Darcy Lavoie Quarterback
Blake Rennick Slotback
Yannick Paquin Wide Receiver
Dimitri Pronko Offensive Tackle
Patrick Mondor Offensive Guard
Lamar McCormack Defensive End
Nicolas Lortie Linebacker
Michael Black Cornerback
David Currie Halfback
William Wojcik Safety
In addition, the Bengals dominated the overall League Awards, taking five out of seven categories:
Most Valuable Player Michael Black
Top Offensive Player Yannick Paquin
Top Defensive Player Nicolas Lortie
Rookie of the Year William Wojcik
And, most fittingly of all, Coach of the Year was awarded to our Midget Head Coach, Ntare Bainomugisha.
Our Midget Bengals not only represented our club with great skill and sportsmanship, but they also helped to raise the level of play and profile of the Midget League overall. Once thought to be jeopardy, the Midget Division looks to be undergoing a renaissance in 2012, with the possibility of an expansion to up to eight teams. I strongly believe that our club has played a role in that. Ntare, you and your staff can take a bow for a job well done.

Concussion Awareness...
The recent injury to NHL star and Olympic hero Sidney Crosby has put a face on the issue of concussions in sports. Be it hockey, soccer, baseball, or football, there is now increased awareness of sports related head injuries. This is actually a positive development, as the increased awareness is leading to better education of coaches, trainers, players, and parents.
Concussions can occur in any activity – on the playground, on a toboggan, on a skateboard, etc. Indeed, girls soccer, for instance, has recently been profiled in the media for a rash of concussions. It is probably fair to say that the nature of girls soccer has not changed significantly in recent years. What has changed is our awareness of head injuries.
The Bengals have a three part strategy to deal with the risk of concussions:
· Prevention through quality, well fitted helmets
· Prevention through coaching that teaches and emphasizes safe play
· Diagnosis through qualified trainers who look for signs of concussion, and immediately remove from play any player suspected of suffering a concussion
The greatest danger, according to medical experts, lies not with the first concussion, but rather if an athlete sustains a second concussion before fully recovering from the first injury. This puts an athlete at risk for a number of long term, potentially serious medical problems. This is why we require a physician’s note for any player returning to play after suffering a concussion – no exceptions.
Bengal dad Ken Brunet is an Exercise Physiologist at the Peak Centre for Human Performance, located at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata. ( www.peakcentre.ca ) The Peak Centre offers concussion testing both for athletes suspected of suffering a concussion, and for those looking to get what is known as a “baseline” test. A growing number of teams at the pro and university level are having their athletes get a baseline test, allowing them to more easily determine when an athlete is ready to return to action following a concussion. You can read more about the Peak Centre’s concussion testing here (Concussion Testing) or contact Ken at the Peak Centre. (KBrunet@Peakcentre.ca). He would be pleased to answer any questions you may have!

SPECIAL OFFER TO PARENTS AND PLAYERS...
I have come to realize how important "Facebook" has become in today's day and age. That being said although selling photos last year was a success, I believe that more can be done for all. This year I'm offering digital memberships, let me explain.
For a one time fee you can receive via e-mail all photos containing yourself or as a parent, your child. Once you receive the file you can print as many as you want, post them all over "Facebook" or wherever you want. You'll receive a file large enough to print 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 prints.
The breakdown is very simple, for each player the fee for the entire year is $50.00 and for a family with 2 players it is $75.00 and a family with 3 players involved the fee is $100.00, all prices include taxes. A player purchasing a membership can only receive his/her photos and the same applies for families. What it works out to is for a value of purchasing 3 prints you receive all photos that contain yourself or your child with a guarantee of at least 10 photos per player
Also if you purchase a membership within the next 30 days you'll receive $10.00 off the price. This offer is only for action shots taken throughout the year, I will be posting special offers for individual and team photos at a later date.
You can purchase your membership right here by sending me an e-mail today at bob@bobrowsellphotography.com and I'll send you a membership form or click here for a printable order form...
BE A BENGAL NOT A BULLY...
A primary goal of the Bengals organization is to foster a healthy and safe environment for our community’s youth. Through football, we aim to promote sportsmanship, a competitive spirit, and self-respect.
The Bengals have teamed with the Dare 2 Dream Program (offered through the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health at CHEO www.daretodreamprogram.ca) for the third consecutive year to offer all of our players an opportunity to work together to combat bullying in our community. This initiative was designed to give practical peer-mentoring and social networking skills to all of our youth in our competitive programs.
Through a series of on-field trust exercise, which built trust between players, while offering physical fitness benefits (as well as being fun), our youth learn to support one another and work together for success outside their normal comfort zone. These on-field sessions are complemented with in-class discussions from coaches, parents, youth and guest speakers on the topic of bullying.
The youth participating in this project already taught the executive of the club a great deal about the realities they face every day confronting bullies and they have reinforced for the club the benefits they realize from being part of an inclusive organization. A key measure of success of the project was the response rate to a survey designed to measure impact and safety on the field. The participants responded overwhelmingly (95%) that they felt safe, heard, valued, and respected on the Bengals football field.
These sessions are open to all youth in our community and due to the grant funding we have received are offered free of charge. We understand that many of our youth are involved with other winter sports, but encourage youth to come out to one, any or all of the sessions that fit their schedule.
